The makers of the popular game engine Kestrel say they are now working on a way to make games that don’t need to be powered by any special software to work.

“We can’t use special hardware to make this engine work in darkness,” developer and game director Tom Gresham told the ABC.
“It’s just really hard to do that.”
He said his company, Kestvel, had built a system that would let the engine run in darkness without requiring special hardware.
“Basically we just plug in a USB cable and the engine runs in the darkness,” he said.
“So you can run the engine at any time, anywhere in the world.”

What makes it different?
Mr Gretsman said the Kestrol engine was different to other engine projects because the team could work on it on a “commercial scale”.
“The key to making this engine commercial is having a lot of resources,” he explained.
“In a normal game engine you’d have a lot more than one programmer, and it would be a lot harder to do.”
So it’s not like a lot is being put into it to make it a commercial engine.
“But the fact that it’s open source means we can just drop it off and do it, and we can share it with anyone who wants to build something similar.”
The engine, named after the Greek word for “world”, is the result of a collaboration between Mr G Resham and Kestred.
It was developed by a team of about 40 people working in Germany and Australia.
Mr GResham, who is also a member of Kestres game development team, said he had worked on the engine for about six years, starting in 2005.
“There was a lot that I wanted to do in the past, but I was not able to, because of the difficulties of working in a large company,” he admitted.
“The only thing I did that got done was building this engine.”

Kestrls engine has been used by the likes of “Star Wars”, “Super Mario” and “Grand Theft Auto”, which all use it to create the worlds of their games.
Mr Resham said his first interest in the engine came when he was working on “The Sims”, and was keen to make something new.
“This was back in 2004, when it was just a concept,” he recalled.
